Starting in the USA in 1974, Gynecologic Oncology first developed as a subspecialty when it was recognized that treatment of gynecologic cancers (those affecting the genital and reproductive systems of women) needed specialized training and skills. Moreover treatment often involves the use of several different modalities for any one cancer or the use of different modalities at different stages. Today Gynecologic Oncology (Gyn Oncology) is an accepted subspecialty in many parts of the world including Singapore where it is recognized by the College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists of Singapore.

Gynecologic Cancers are those affecting the following organs in women

Cervix (mouth of the womb)
Uterus (or Uterine body)
Ovaries
Vulva and Vagina
Fallopian tubes
Abnormal pregnancies (mole/molar pregnancies)
- Trophoblastic diseases
